What the hell is "Genius Bonus"?
To be honest, I never put too much hope in blogs. I start one every once in a while and then, a few days, weeks, months later it withers and dies. If you want to read my blabbering about it, best do it here, instead of this subpage. Here, I would like to tell you what this particular blog is about.
OK, it's easy to summarize - it's about me. Once we get into details, however, things are a bit more interesting. The term "Genius Bonus", according to TVTropes.org, is "A joke or tidbit meant for people knowledgeable in a certain field. The rest of the audience doesn't get it, but it's usually subtle enough for them not to care. (...) Understanding one of these may lead to Fridge Brilliance". And while "Fridge Brilliance" sound just as good, it would really fit a more food-oriented blog than this ;)
To put things in my perspective, a Genius Bonus translates to that feeling of satisfaction when you realize you know something other people don't. Now, if you're new to this blog and you don't know me personally, then I'll bring you up to speed: my brain resembles a black hole when it comes to information. I'm drawn to all sorts of knowledge and I soak it all up, usually not seeming any smarter than before. But it's all there, either tightly packed up in some superdense formation or flowing freely in some other dimension, or whatever other metaphor you'd like to use. And every once in a while something leaks out like a form of dark energy or some other weird radiation. It usually happens when I'm in the middle of discussing something completely different, then somebody tosses an obscuire non sequitur at me - and I respond in a way which feels completely natural to me.
So yeah. That's the Genius Bonus. My reward for picking up all that disjointed data on languages, arts, technology, history, medicine (alright, I actually got that info through education) and all sorts of other more or less obscure topics.
Doesn't that... well... hurt your brain?
Hell no. I think it's a natural ability of every human mind, just more or less supressed depending on the individual. It helps if you're a passionate person, with a very unfocused sort of passion. I'm passionate. OK, OK, usually I'm just angry. But anger is more or less the same thing as passion, so stop nitpicking.
So what does all this rambling have to do with this blog?
Well, if you haven't figured it out yet, almost every post here is a reflection of one of those moments of realization. To an open mind, every little discovery, every connection it makes between two pieces of data, every new tidbit of knowledge gained (not just soaked up, but truly understood) is a small epiphany. While you might find some negativity here, what I'm trying to do is celebrate these epiphanies, to cherish every time I feel I'm actually worth something. And to share it with the world, because if a tree falls and no one is there to hear it, nobody gives a fuck.
There. It wasn't so bad, was it?
